A few weeks ago we reported that Psystar was going to launch a new tower capable of running Mac OS X. Not only that, but they planned to ship their computer with our favourite operating system pre-installed, with reports that the company was willing to fight Apple’s restrictive licensing terms in court if necessary. Despite rumors that the whole project was a hoax, and a somewhat uneventful response from Apple so far, it appears that the first few Mac clones have indeed shipped. Although first hand experience is for the most part positive, there are small issues involving the software update and no guarantees Apple won’t put these things out of commission when they release 10.5.3. Gizmodo has posted a demonstration video here.

Steve Jobs, cofounder of Apple, has been on Time Magazine’s cover five times, and featured in the top 100 most influential people of the year list three times in the past. Unlocking and jailbreaking iPhones has been common practice for a while now, in fact earlier this week, Apple Insider revealed that an extensive study released by Rubicon Consulting reveals that nearly one half of US iPhone users have taken measures to add applications to the handset on their own, while just a bit more than 10 percent say they’ve unlocked the device from AT&T’s wireless network. This doesn’t even include the thousands of iPhones being parallel imported into countries where the iPhone has yet to be officially released. Russia is one of the leaders in this regard according to Bloomberg, who just published a report stating that around 250,000 people own iPhones, more than any other country except the US and China…

Arstechnica is reporting that Apple has surpassed Walmart to become the largest music retailer in the US, holding 19% of the market. Amazon, who has recently started selling music online placed a distant fourth at just 6% of the market according to an email sent to a select group of employees. It is expected that Apple will make an official announcement early next week.
Update: Apple has now confirmed that this report is correct.
