Despite Vodafone’s initial announcement that Apple’s iPhone 3G would be available to customers in New Zealand, Australia, Italy and Portugal on both contract and prepay when it is released next month, it now appears that New Zealand and Portgual will miss out on the latter option. This has prompted Philip Roy, owner of NZMac.com, to petition Vodafone to change their stance on the matter. Sign the petition here…

Apple’s first retail store in Australia will open on George Street in Sydney on Thursday, 19 June at 5:00 pm. Located in the heart of the city’s shopping district, the Apple Store Sydney features two floors dedicated to Macs and iPods and a third floor entirely dedicated to service, including the world’s largest Genius Bar for free advice and personal training through Apple’s popular One to One membership…

Apple today announced that downloads of its iPhone SDK (Software Development Kit) have topped more than 250,000 since its launch on March 6. The iPhone SDK provides developers with the same rich set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and tools that Apple uses to create its native applications for iPhone. Apple today also announced that its amazing new App Store will be available in 62 countries bringing a breakthrough way for developers to wirelessly deliver their applications directly to iPhone and iPod touch users around the world. The University of Otago has launched Otago on iTunes U, making it the first New Zealand university to deliver free education content through the iTunes Store. iTunes U is a dedicated area of the iTunes Store featuring free lectures, lab demonstrations, campus tours, and more. Users can search, download and play content with the same ease-of-use with which they download music, exploring world-class materials from top universities around the globe. Apple today announced that movies from major film studios including 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros, Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), Sony Pictures Television International and Lionsgate are now available on the iTunes Store in Canada and the UK. Movie purchases and rentals feature iTunes’ legendary ease of use, which makes discovering and enjoying movies as simple and easy as buying music on iTunes has always been. The iTunes Store in the UK features over 700 films available for rent or purchase, with titles available for purchase on the same day as their DVD release, including favorites such as Hitman, I Am Legend and National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets. iTunes Movie Rentals also features over 100 titles available in high definition, perfect for viewing on a widescreen TV with Apple TV.

Many readers may have noticed that our last news item was posted almost a month ago. Once again we’ve been having problems with our content management system and finding the time to fix it has been somewhat of an issue, but it seems that we’ve managed to get everything in order just in time for Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference next week (those using browsers other than Safari can expect interface abnormalities to be ironed out over the next month or so). Speculation and rumors are rampant as usual, but we’ll be posting our take on the situation over the next few days. Additionally, our review of Sennheiser’s CX 400 in ear noise isolation headphones should be ready to go in the next few weeks and we’ll be posting further information on how you can make your name in the blogosphere by contributing weekly, monthly or one off items to maccrazy.
