Given that the iPhone 3G hysteria still seems to be raging, I thought I might post something a bit different today: a photo of a Japanese iPhone 3G running on SoftBank’s network in Japan. However, looking at our stats from the last few days (in which viewer numbers have been up around ten times, and transfer up significantly more) it seems that Japan is home to a pretty sizable number of readers (for those counting, they came in third place behind New Zealand and the United States). Unfortunately, I haven’t found a SoftBank with employees fluent in English, and my Japanese certainly isn’t good enough to try and work out whether the phone can be bought without a contract or unlocked, so I won’t be buying one while I’m here. Interestingly, the phone still has one bar of signal strength despite the fact it was taken well below the ground in an Osaka subway station store. A close up photo after the break…

It seems a bit strange to be writing our iPhone 3G wrap up five hours before the phone even goes on sale in the US. However, it has been on sale here in New Zealand for almost a day and is now available in most other countries. Those who have been following our articles over the last few days will probably have seen our video interviews of those waiting in line outside the Auckland Vodafone store. First we will do a general summary for international readers, and then local summary for our New Zealand readers, including the possibility of running the iPhone on prepay…

Reed Expositions has announced that this year’s Apple Expo in Paris will take place between Wednesday September 17th and Saturday September 20th 2008 at Porte de Versailles, Hall 5. Though Apple has in previous years been an exhibitor and used the expo to announce new products such as the iMac G5, this year they will not be attending. While Apple’s annual Macworld Expo and Worldwide Developers Conferences in San Francisco continue to attract record attendee numbers, Apple has reduced its presence at other expos in recent years which has led to the decline of IDG World Expo’s east coast Macworld New York/Boston, which was last held in 2004, and Macworld Tokyo, last held in 2002…

With the iPhone launching in such a variety of countries around the world on July 11th, it is near impossible for us to keep up with every local development. Therefore, we will be focusing on our area of the world, providing coverage of developments in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States. However, TUAW has published a great international summary outlining purchase prices, data plan costs and contract terms, which vary from six months in Denmark to three years in Canada. The table can be found here. Of note is the fact that Vodafone is yet to announce its pricing, despite the fact that they will be the first provider to sell the iPhone 3G.

Despite Vodafone’s initial announcement that Apple’s iPhone 3G would be available to customers in New Zealand, Australia, Italy and Portugal on both contract and prepay when it is released next month, it now appears that New Zealand and Portgual will miss out on the latter option. This has prompted Philip Roy, owner of NZMac.com, to petition Vodafone to change their stance on the matter. Sign the petition here…
