Video: iPhone 3G Line in Auckland
July 10th, 2008
Given that maccrazy is New Zealand’s premier Mac focused website, it seemed only fitting that someone went to check out the iPhone queue outside Vodafone’s Auckland CBD store, where the world’s first iPhone will be sold to Jonny Gladwell, a student studying physiotherapy at AUT.

Amongst others, I also talked to Evert Bruyns, who is planning on giving away the two he purchases (one to someone who misses out and the other via Wish Collector) and Luke Soules from iFixit, who has flown from California in order to be the first to pull the iPhone apart and find out who Apple’s component suppliers are (his live disassembly will be posted here). Those waiting in line were using a nearby Tomizone hotspot for internet access. The company is offering access to their wifi Hotspots free of charge to iPhone and iPod touch users for up to three months or 500 Mb of data – whichever occurs first.
Unfortunately the built-in microphone on my camera isn’t the best, so there is a lot of background noise in some parts. Anyone with any suggestions on how to reduce this is welcome to contract me or post a message in the comments.
At 3:00, nine hours before the iPhone goes on sale, there were just ten people in the line, though numbers will no doubt grow closer to midnight. Numbers were apparently around 75 by 8:00.
Update: It has been suggested that the final number of people in the line at midnight was around 200.
