Psystar To Launch Long Lost Headless Mac
April 14th, 2008
Oh yes, you read the title right. Psystar has announced plans to start selling a US$399 tower capable of running Mac OS X. Not only that, but they claim they’ll also pre-install our favourite OS if you want them to. Their site is currently being bombarded with traffic, so we’ll fill you in on the details. Spec wise, it is definitely more powerful than a Mac mini, with a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, along with 2GB of DDR2 667 memory, a DVD burner, 4 USB ports and 250GB 7200RPM hard drive. Though it only includes integrate graphics, there is an option to upgrade to a more powerful dedicated chip from the likes of NVIDIA or ATI.

From their website:
Apple’s entry-level computer, the Mac Mini, is a small and not very powerful machine. When comparing base configurations, the Mac Mini costs 150% of the price of the Open Computer while offering poorer performance, smaller storage space, and RAM. Not only that but the Mac Mini doesn’t have the option for an nVidia GeForce 8600 video card like the Open Computer does so playing games on it is a lost cause.
Clearly such a product would violate the Mac OS X Software License and Agreement:
A. Single Use. This License allows you to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time. You agree not to install, use or run the Apple Software on any non-Apple-labeled computer, or to enable others to do so.
Everyone knows about Steve’s deep distaste for clones, and while Apple’s legal department may be busy battling with all those iPhone hackers, they will no doubt be onto Psystar before you can say OpenMac Open Computing (they’ve already changed the name), so be sure to checkout their site before they get taken out.
