Arstechnica is reporting that Apple has surpassed Walmart to become the largest music retailer in the US, holding 19% of the market. Amazon, who has recently started selling music online placed a distant fourth at just 6% of the market according to an email sent to a select group of employees. It is expected that Apple will make an official announcement early next week…
Update: Apple has now confirmed that this report is correct:
“We launched iTunes less than five years ago, and it has now become the number one music retailer in the world,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “We are thrilled, and would like to thank all of our customers for helping us reach this incredible milestone.”
