As widely expected, Vodafone will become a dominate iPhone supplier following the signing an agreement with Apple today to sell the iPhone in ten of its markets around the globe. Later this year, Vodafone customers in New Zealand, Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, South Africa and Turkey will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network. It appears that the deal will be exclusive, although there are suspicions that an unlocked model will be made available in some markets (as in France). Of note, Vodafone New Zealand has recently started locking phones…

April 27th, 2008A few weeks ago we reported that Psystar was going to launch a new tower capable of running Mac OS X. Not only that, but they planned to ship their computer with our favourite operating system pre-installed, with reports that the company was willing to fight Apple’s restrictive licensing terms in court if necessary. Despite rumors that the whole project was a hoax, and a somewhat uneventful response from Apple so far, it appears that the first few Mac clones have indeed shipped. Although first hand experience is for the most part positive, there are small issues involving the software update and no guarantees Apple won’t put these things out of commission when they release 10.5.3. Gizmodo has posted a demonstration video here.

I began writing this review while on the bus home from university. Having carried a PowerBook in my backpack in previous years, the MacBook Air is certainly a welcomed change. While not a laptop for power users, it is more than adequate for lighter use. But how does it really benchmark against other Macs? Are common criticisms online and in the media founded on real use or simply conjecture? Since the release of the MacBook Air, almost every major publication has released a review of some sort. Instead of evaluating every aspect of the MacBook Air, this review will focus on some of the more common concerns and differences between the Air and its larger counterparts, the MacBook and the MacBook Pro…
April 15th, 2008Steve Jobs, cofounder of Apple, has been on Time Magazine’s cover five times, and featured in the top 100 most influential people of the year list three times in the past. However, at the time of writing, Steve is sitting at 200th place, with a mere 23% rating. Michael Dell and Steve Ballmer are even beating him at this stage, so if you’re can’t live without your iPhone, iPod touch, AppleTV, or any other Apple product, be sure to place your vote here.
April 14th, 2008Oh yes, you read the title right. Psystar has announced plans to start selling a US$399 tower capable of running Mac OS X. Not only that, but they claim they’ll also pre-install our favourite OS if you want them to. Their site is currently being bombarded with traffic, so we’ll fill you in on the details. Spec wise, it is definitely more powerful than a Mac mini, with a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, along with 2GB of DDR2 667 memory, a DVD burner, 4 USB ports and 250GB 7200RPM hard drive. Though it only includes integrate graphics, there is an option to upgrade to a more powerful dedicated chip from the likes of NVIDIA or ATI…
April 8th, 2008Originally demonstrated last year, Apple today announced that Final Cut Server, a powerful software solution for media asset management and workflow automation, is now shipping. A scaleable server application, Final Cut Server automatically catalogs large collections of assets, allows searching across multiple disks and SAN volumes and enables viewing, annotation and approval of content from anywhere using a PC or Mac…
April 3rd, 2008Unlocking and jailbreaking iPhones has been common practice for a while now, in fact earlier this week, Apple Insider revealed that an extensive study released by Rubicon Consulting reveals that nearly one half of US iPhone users have taken measures to add applications to the handset on their own, while just a bit more than 10 percent say they’ve unlocked the device from AT&T’s wireless network. This doesn’t even include the thousands of iPhones being parallel imported into countries where the iPhone has yet to be officially released. Russia is one of the leaders in this regard according to Bloomberg, who just published a report stating that around 250,000 people own iPhones, more than any other country except the US and China…
April 3rd, 2008Arstechnica is reporting that Apple has surpassed Walmart to become the largest music retailer in the US, holding 19% of the market. Amazon, who has recently started selling music online placed a distant fourth at just 6% of the market according to an email sent to a select group of employees. In February, Apple announced that it was the number two music retailer in the US, having sold over four billion songs, with an incredible 20 million songs sold on Christmas Day 2007 alone. It is expected that Apple will make an official announcement early next week.
Update: Apple has now confirmed that this report is correct.
April 1st, 2008As many of you may have noticed, we’ve been a bit behind on posting news items over the last few weeks. This was largely due to problems with our content management system. However, everything is working fine now and over the next few weeks we hope to clear up any remaining CSS bugs (particularly the AJAX login system which is working far from perfectly). If you run a Mac hardware or software development company and wish for us to publish your press releases, please read on. Additionally, if you are interested in writing for maccrazy, further details are published in this article…
